Policy: Letters to the Exchange

Letters express the opinion of the writer and do not represent the opinion of the Acton Exchange or its Board of Directors.

How to submit

  • Email letters@actonexchange.org  with the text of the letter in the body of the email.
  • Sign your message with your full name, and include a street address and phone number so the editors can reach you with any questions. Street address and phone numbers will not be printed.
  • Do not exceed 350 words in length.
  • For letters written in response to an article in the Acton Exchange, mention the article title and publication date.

Who can submit

  • The letter-writer must have some connection to Acton. If the Acton connection is other than current resident, state the nature of the Acton connection (e.g. work in Acton, former resident) in the text of the letter.
  • Letters from minors are welcome, but the name and phone number of a parent or guardian is required.
  • If you are a member of a board or committee and are writing about a topic related to that board or committee, disclose that you are on that board or committee within the letter. Indicate whether you are writing on behalf of yourself or representing the group.

What gets published

  • Letters will be published at the discretion of the Letter Committee.
  • The content of the letter must be related to a local topic.
  • We will not publish letters that are obscene, defamatory, or libelous.
  • We will not publish anonymous letters, form letters, or blanket-mail letters.
  • The Letter Committee reserves the right to edit for length, clarity, or grammar.
  • The Letter Committee may limit the number of letters published each month by any one person.
  • For letters with multiple signers, the Letter Committee may request that the letter be from one person on behalf of that group.

Election and Town Meeting letters

  • Letters relating to upcoming elections must be received at least one week before the election.
  • Concerning elections, we accept letters that support your candidate or position, but not that denigrate an opponent.
  • Letters relating to Town Meeting, Special Town Meeting, or Acton Water District Annual Meeting must be received at least one week before the event.
