Ms. Costa, originally from Brazil, brings her experience as a former college professor, where she guided students in developing business plans and analyzing macroeconomic trends. She has worked in the United States for eight years, as a visiting research scholar at UMass Boston and area towns before joining Acton’s Office of Economic Development.

In her first month, Ms. Costa has focused on engaging with local business owners to understand their needs and aspirations, aiming to shape a comprehensive view of Acton’s economic landscape. “Economic development is not just about dollars or data; it’s about people,” she emphasized, highlighting her commitment to aligning departmental efforts with community goals to enhance quality of life, work opportunities, and housing options.

Among her initiatives, Ms. Costa is resuming the Cultural Arts Strategic Plan in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, set for completion by year’s end. She has also organized a “Brunch with Business Owners” event on June 11 at Town Hall in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Supplier Diversity Office, and SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives), to connect entrepreneurs with resources and networking opportunities, and encouraged public feedback on the forthcoming Economic Development Strategic Plan draft.

Board members welcomed Ms. Costa’s energetic start. Vice-Chair Alissa Nicol welcomed the renewed focus on arts and culture and opportunities to engage non-business stakeholders, such as artists and organizations like the Acton Historical Society and Discovery Museum. Ms. Costa affirmed her intent to connect with all facets of the community, underscoring that “each singular part truly matters” to Acton’s success.

Residents and business owners are invited to reach out to Ms Costa to share their insights and contribute to the town’s economic future.
