The purchase of these Fair Trade items benefit the artisans who made them – Mayan Hands collaborates with 15 artisan groups in the rural Guatemalan highlands, representing about 200 skilled craftswomen; UPAVIM’s member cooperative, located in a “Red Zone” of Guatemala City plagued by gang and violence, is comprised of more than 70 women working as seamstresses and making handicrafts. The Carlisle Dance, with its accompanying potluck dinner, is known as the most sociable dance in the area. Arrive at 6:30 for dinner and conversation, and then dance from 8 until 10. Live music by the Carlisle Band, who bring an eclectic collection of instruments. Outstanding local callers call mostly contradances, plus occasional square and circle dances. This lecture will commemorate the 250th anniversary of Thomas Paine's Common Sense. The presenter is Greg Jarboe, who studied Comparative Colonial History at the University of Edinburgh. Greg will explore how Paine's 46-page pamphlet transformed American sentiment from seeking reconciliation with the British Crown to demanding independence by dismantling assumptions about monarchy. He’ll connect this ideological revolution to Acton's military role, tracing how local Minutemen evolved from defending their "rights as Englishmen" to fighting for an independent republic during the Siege of Boston.
