This past weekend, Acton faced a massive nor’easter, dumping a foot or more of snow across streets and sidewalks. Residents dug out driveways, cleared roads, and watched as town crews worked to keep the town moving. The recent storm was a reminder that in an emergency, every minute counts and every service matters. A new podcast series, “Our Tax Dollars at Work” seeks to help Acton residents understand what happens behind the scenes in such situations. “Our Tax Dollars at Work” was conceptualized by Greg Jarboe and created along with John Petersen and Sahana Purohit.

The first five episodes of “Our Tax Dollars at Work” focus on September 8, 2023, when a sudden microburst tore through Acton just as schools were letting out. Powerful winds knocked down trees, blocked roads, and caused power outages. Students were still in classrooms, and buses were lining up to leave when chaos hit.
Firefighters, police, and DPW staff sprang into action. They cleared roads, checked on residents and coordinated efforts through the town’s dispatch system. All departments worked together to make sure people were safe and informed. Petersen interviewed first responders, school staff, and neighbors affected by the storm, showing both the human side and the behind-the-scenes teamwork that made the response possible. Each of the five episodes is between 15-20 minutes long.
The series shows how emergencies affect the entire community. While residents faced power outages, blocked roads, and limited communication, they also stepped up by helping neighbors, clearing streets, and managing urgent problems when town systems were stretched.
The response wasn’t accidental. It came from planning, trained staff, and public investment. At the same time, it showed where improvements are needed, from staffing to equipment updates. The storm tested both Acton’s systems and its people, and the lessons go beyond one day. They show what works, what could be stronger, and why residents’ involvement matters for future emergencies.
After the microburst episodes, the series will explore other aspects of town services and community life, showing how Acton uses planning, teamwork, and public resources to keep the community safe and running smoothly. The creators are currently editing the videos, and the first episode is expected to be released the weekend before Presidents Day, just in time for winter break.
