Jan. 3, Barker’s Pond, South Acton: Some enthusiastic skaters braved, or more likely embraced, the cold weather ushering in the new year, to play some pickup hockey games with their friends today. The recent snowfall was no obstacle, as residents Matt McDonald and his son Ryan worked hard to clear the ice, creating three separate rinks. The next day at the pond saw no hockey players in the late afternoon but, instead, parents giving their young children sled rides on the ice.

For safer skating, authorities recommend always testing the ice close to shore for thickness, as it can melt quickly during warm spells, never skate alone, and always make sure that someone knows where you are.
