On the evening of Saturday, December 21, over 60 residents of the Minuteman Ridge neighborhood came together in a powerful demonstration of support for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Longest Night Campaign.
Participants lit luminary bags, each adorned with the names of loved ones, friends, and neighbors affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The neighborhood glowed with dozens of lights, symbolizing a shared commitment to raising awareness and funds to combat this devastating illness.
The event is part of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Longest Night initiative, which encourages communities to unite on the winter solstice – the darkest day of the year – to shine light on the path toward a world without Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, funds raised during the campaign support research, care, and advocacy efforts for the nearly seven million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and their 11 million caregivers.
“Families participated in various ways, lighting luminaries along their property, at their doors, in windows, or even around Christmas trees,” said Paulette Farmer, an Acton resident and event participant.
The walk through Minuteman Ridge was a poignant experience for many attendees. The warm glow of the luminaries and the quiet reflection of the evening provided a moment to honor those lost to the disease while strengthening the resolve to fight for a brighter future.
Through its initiatives, the Alzheimer’s Association supports global research, promotes risk reduction strategies, and provides resources for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
