JR Rug Gallery to close

Movses Movsesian moved from Armenia to the United States, hoping to find employment as a chemical engineer. That didn’t work out but he did land in the rug business, first by demonstrating an ability to repair rugs, a skill he picked up by watching his grandmother in his home country. He was employed by Janigian Rug company, where he became part owner.

In 1986 he became sole owner of the Janigian store. Eight years ago, he moved his business from Concord to 61 Great Road in Acton, directly behind Bella’s Famiglia restaurant. Movsesian renamed the company JR Rug Gallery. As with many businesses, the Covid epidemic hurt and the rug store has never recovered.

The building at 61 Great Road has been on the market for several years. It now appears likely that the property will be redeveloped, and Movsesian has decided to close. A liquidation sale is underway with any reasonable offer considered. He is unsure what the future holds. He may retire or, if the right opportunity appears, he might open in a smaller retail space in Acton or a nearby town. A closing date has not been set.

Movsesian sells rugs from Armenia, Turkey, Tibet, and Persia. The store also offered rug cleaning, repair, and restoration of rugs.
