Jan. 3, Acton-Boxborough High School gym: An enthusiastic Friday night crowd cheered on the A-B boys basketball team against Dual County League rival Newton South, but it wasn’t enough, as the Colonials lost, 57-54. Scoring in double figures were Chaz Yourk with 13 points, Jake Moorman with 10, and Brayden Flannery with 11, which included draining four straight technical foul shots to close the Lions’ lead to 34-31.

The visitors surged in the third quarter to boost a 27-23 halftime lead to 43-33, spurring the Colonials to come storming back to close the gap late in the second half with the help of a full-court press, and some key three-pointers by Yourk and Flannery. But the Lions took advantage of their hosts’ late-game foul trouble by sinking clutch free throws to seal the victory.

Coach Mike Morris’ team, now 2-4 overall, hosted Bedford on Jan. 7, and traveled to Westford Academy on Jan. 10. Corey Lowe’s Newton South squad improved to 2-3.
