Acton 250: British Naval Power in the Revolution

Professor Bill Fowler will explain the importance of British naval power in the early years of the Revolution. The Royal Navy was the most powerful in the world at that time and central to the closing of the port and siege of Boston. Professor Fowler will detail how Massachusetts and the other colonies were able to respond.

Professor William Fowler is the author of several books with some focused on the naval history in the 18^th and 19^th centuries. Before recent retirement at Northeastern, Professor Fowler taught courses dealing with the history of Boston, maritime history, and the history of New England. He is the former Gay Hart Gaines Distinguished Fellow in American History at Mount Vernon. He has taught at Mystic Seaport Museum and has lectured at the Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Naval War College.
