The grocery store Aldi is coming to town. The business intends on outfitting the space formerly occupied by Stop and Shop on Powdermill Road in South Acton. An opening date has not been announced. Select Board member Fran Arsenault, who heard the news from Economic Development Director Patricia Costa, said, “I am very excited to have a food store in town that is more affordable, [and] within walking distance of the new Powdermill apartment development. Aldi’s is going to bring so many folks to Acton to shop.”

State Senator Jamie Eldridge also waxed enthusiastic in a Sept. 5 Facebook post. He said that the store will be the first Aldi in the Middlesex and Worcester district. “The company has an extremely loyal customer base, is known for low prices, mostly sells just its own brand, and [is] skilled on social media.”

A press release from the company dated February 7, 2025 says Aldi is “the fastest growing grocer in the U.S.” They plan to open over 200 stores this year to add to the existing 2400 stores making it the third largest grocery chain in this country based on store count.

In 1947, the Albrecht brothers took over their mother’s grocery store in Germany. After expanding to 300 stores in 1961 they decided to go their separate ways. One brother’s new company, Aldi Sud, began the Aldi grocery store chain. They opened their first store in the United States in 1976. The other brother’s company, Aldi Nord, purchased Trader Joe’s in the 1979 and continues to operate the chain.

Mayuri, an Indian restaurant, will open a new location in the Acton Plaza between CVS and Kitchen Outfitters. They were located in Nagog Mall but were forced to shut down when McGovern demolished part of the Mall to construct a Subaru dealership.
