SUMMARY:Library: Great Decisions Group Discussion – U.S. Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room\, Acton Memorial Library\, 486 Main Street\, Acton\, MA\, 01720\n \n\nGreat Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. This months topic will be on U.S. Leadership. A short article is available from the Great Decisions briefing book. Please read it ahead of the meeting. It is available in the library. \nUnder President Biden\, the U.S. has advanced new ideas about trade\, technology\, industrial policy\, competition with China\, and the organization of the world economy. For most of the postwar era\, the U.S. has tied its global leadership to cooperative agendas aimed at creating a more open-world trading system\, but that has apparently come to an end. What are America’s options and opportunities as a leader of the world economy? How will America’s “foreign policy for the middle class” and strategic competition with China impact its leadership role? How can the postwar rules and institutions of the world economy be made safe for economic nationalism and great power competition? \nReasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities are available upon request by emailing library@actonma.gov.

SUMMARY:Friends of Pine Hawk: Hockomock Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:“Hockomock” in Algonquin means “land where spirits dwell” and is a revered Wampanoag sacred site\, and later a “Devil’s Swamp” for English settlers. Join Dan Boudillion and Bettina Abe for a 2-mile hike at Hockomock Swamp\, a Massachusetts Wildlife Management Area in Raynham\, Mass. \nThere is much lore surrounding the history of Hockomock Swamp\, beginning in the 1600s. The area is the largest freshwater swamp in the state and is known for sightings of floating orbs of light\, ghostly voices\, and phantom drums linked to its past as an ancient burial ground and a natural fortress during King Phillip’s War. \nWe will walk the trail\, while Dan shares the many stories and lore he has collected over the years. We will meet in Acton and carpool down Route 495 for approximately one hour drive to “the Bridgewater Triangle.” \nFriends of Pine Hawk events are free but this walk requires registration at https://tinyurl.com/2025-Pinehawk

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Pine Hawk Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Acton’s most significant archaeological discovery\, the Pine Hawk site in South Acton. The site was inhabited by Native Americans for over several thousand years and yielded a treasure trove of artifacts. Doug Halley was the Acton official most involved as the discovery of this site unfolded over 20 years ago. He will describe that process of discovery\, its significance\, and how the project activated an increased interest in historical preservation\, such as the Trail Through Time in North Acton. Doug also created an award-winning exhibit about Pine Hawk\, which can be seen today on the ground floor of the Acton Memorial Library. This program is presented with support from Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nThis event is free and does not require registration. It will be recorded for future viewing at https://www.pinehawk.org/videos/. Questions? Email friends.of.pinehawk@gmail.com
