DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Emerson Health is pleased to present its 8th annual EmerSong – an A Cappella Festival. \nHigh school\, college\, and adult a cappella groups\, including those from Concord\, Weston and Lexington\, will come together for a lively music festival using only their voices as instruments. Proceeds from EmerSong will benefit behavioral and mental health patients at Emerson\, including relaxation tools for adolescents seen in the Emergency Department\, music and gardening therapy groups for patients\, and staff education and training. \nSome amazing groups from local universities and high schools will fill out this year’s bill in both shows\, including the Radcliffe Pitches\, Brandeis University’s Up The Octave\, Tufts sQ!\, Brandeis’ Voicemale\, Amherst Zumbyes\, Concord-Carlisle’s Take Notes\, Lexington High School’s PBJ\, and Weston High School’s Pralines. Adult groups include Broadband and The Works\, both of which have members from Concord\, Weston and surrounding towns. \nThe shows will be emceed by Concord resident Tom Rutledge and includes cabaret-style seating\, snacks\, soft drinks\, and a cash bar at the evening show. Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni\, Alexander Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia\, and John Williams’ Star Wars Suite.  The winner of the young artist competition\, Maggie Bai\, joins the orchestra to perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor. \nOrchestra members Susan Minor\, Bill Ossmann\, John Russell\, and Jerry Vabulas live in Acton.

A pre-concert talk is scheduled for 7:15 on Saturday. \nAlso on the program will be Javelin by Michael Torke. Javelin was commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for its 50th anniversary and it was performed at the opening ceremony of the Atlanta Summer Olympics in 1996. \nThe concert will conclude with Samuel Barber’s lyrical Symphony No. 1 which combines the four movements of a classical symphony into a single movement. It is modeled after Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7\, which is also in one movement. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free.
