I am confused and concerned by the media coverage of EEE [Eastern equine encephalitis] risk from mosquitos in our area. The implication is that we have swarms of mosquitoes locally that are possibly carrying EEE. In fact, this has been a remarkable year for the low incidence of mosquitos. My wife suffers badly from bites and in a normal year cannot venture outside in the evenings while I spend hours chasing errant mosquitos around the house. Not so this year. My observations are not limited to Acton. I travel west to fish and have experienced little mosquito activity as far out as Royalston and Petersham. I have never needed to use repellent while fishing this year. Yet at least one Acton resident has been infected with EEE! Does this mean that the few mosquitos that are around are heavy carriers of the disease? I am interested to know of other observations on this topic.
