SUMMARY:Acton COA Presents: The Odyssey Dramatic Performance with Poornima Kirby and Stephen Collins
DESCRIPTION:What is the cost of our choices? Can love sustain across time\, war and distance? Can you ever really find your way home? Join actors Stephen Collins and Poornima Kirby as they take on this 3\,000-year epic about the adventures of a wily and complicated traveler. Poornima’s adaptation draws from multiple translations\, punctuated with poetry and sea-chanties to connect this age-old epic to our modern time. Told as a marital squabble between Odysseus and his wife Penelope\, the story weaves through Odysseus’ travels and to his arrival in Ithaca to face the fall-out of his absence and find out if he can really come home. With Stephen Collins as the funny\, damaged\, scheming Odysseus and Poornima flowing nimbly between Penelope\, Calypso\, Circe\, the Cyclops and many more characters this artistic\, playful adaptation explores the universal human needs that run through this ancient poem. \nOpen to out-of-town 60+ for $5 \nRegistration required. Call the Senior Center at 978-929-6652 to register.

SUMMARY:Opioid Settlement: What's it all about
DESCRIPTION:The Opioid Settlement is a stream of funding for Massachusetts cities and towns to address substance misuse and substance use disorder. The fund is a result of a class action lawsuit against makers and distributors of opioids from the early 2000’s to the date of the settlement by the Attorney General’s Office. Each community’s funding is based on a few factors\, but the really important thing to know is how we can spend the money. To understand this\, we will review the scope of substance use disorders and supports to help people lead healthier lives. \nPresented by Acton’s Director of Health and Human Services\, Penelope Funaiole.

SUMMARY:Concord Orchestra presents “The Heavenly Life”
DESCRIPTION:The orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with Ann Moss as soprano soloist. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 is a comparatively short work\, lasting less than an hour. The final movement of the symphony is a song “The Heavenly Life” with orchestra accompaniment\, sung by a soprano. The words\, which come from German folk poetry\, are about a child’s naïve view of heaven. The preceding three movements lead up to this song. \nThere are many pleasant tunes and the cozy sound of sleigh bells\, but there are disquieting passages as\nwell. For example\, the second movement is a lively scherzo\, but the principal violin plays an eerie solo\nthat represents the devil’s fiddle. \nSoprano Ann Moss is an acclaimed recording artist\, chamber musician\, and champion of living\ncomposers. She has been a featured soloist with San Francisco Symphony\, SF Chamber Orchestra\, UC\nBerkeley Symphony\, SF Contemporary Music Players\, Music of Remembrance\, and the Ives\, Alexander\,\nLydian and Hausmann String Quartets. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information\,\ncall 978-369-4967 or visit https://www.concordorchestra.com/heavenly-life.
