GOINGS ON AROUND TOWN

Enjoy a meal out and help support the Acton Exchange!

Not Your Average Joe’s (305 Main Street) will donate 15% of the price of all meals you eat at the restaurant on September 3, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 24 (not counting alcohol, tax and tip). Tell your server that you want your meal to support the Acton Exchange and show a copy of this flyer.

As part of the Not Your Average Joe’s fundraiser, every Thursday in September will feature an opportunity to meet and share ideas with some of the volunteers who create your local newspaper. These Thursday dinners convene at 6:00 p.m and are “Dutch treat”– everyone pays for themselves. Prospective volunteers are especially welcome to meet with the group that interests them. RSVP to info@actonexchange.org so we can reserve the right-size table.

  • Sept. 3: Dinner with the Board of Directors – Talk with the newspaper’s leadership about our work, policies, and future plans.
  • Sept. 10: Dinner with the Editors – Connect with the editors to discuss recent stories; learn how new stories are developed and edited. Bring your ideas for future stories.
  • Sept. 17: Dinner with the Tech Team – Learn how a small group of volunteers built, maintain, trouble-shoot, and improve our website, communication/collaboration infrastructure, and analytics for tracking reach and impact.
  • Sept. 24: Dinner with the Marketing/Fundraising Team – Find out how the Acton Exchange makes itself known and raises funds as a nonprofit organization; we’d love to hear your ideas for doing this even better.

The Old Frog Pond Farm & Studio’s 20th outdoor sculpture and poetry exhibit, titled “The Art of Noticing” opens to the public August 26 at the farm’s property at 38 Eldridge Road in Harvard. The exhibit will run from Aug. 26 through Oct. 12, open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children.

Curated by orchardist and artist Linda Hoffman and her daughter, artist Ariel Matisse, “The Art of Noticing” is a sculpture and poetry exhibit that invites contemplation and slowing down. The sculptures, from a variety of artists, are contemplative, playful, poetic, mysterious, and interactive. Poetry has been organized by the farm’s poetry editor, Terry House.

An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Sunday, September 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., including a self-guided tour, pick-your-own organic raspberries, music by Greg Carlson, Blase Provitola, and friends, and refreshments. Donations to the farm would be appreciated.

Boxborough FreeBee Market

The Boxborough FreeBee Market will hold weekly “Food Rescue Saturdays” from July 11 through October 2, on the lawn at UCCB (United Church of Christ, Boxborough), 30 Middle Road in Boxborough. The goal is to avoid letting food go to waste. For these events, volunteers collect food from local donors – farms, retailers and others – that would otherwise be thrown out despite being perfectly good to eat. This food is made available to anyone who wants it, with no vetting or residency requirements.

On four Saturdays during the season, the FreeBee network holds expanded Community Markets. These are designated as larger community events with additional activities and opportunities for people to learn about food rescue, gardening, sustainability, and community organizations. In 2026, upcoming Community Markets will be held on the following dates:

  • Sept 12 – Harvest Market
  • Oct 24 – Halloween/costume finale

See how you can get involved with the FreeBee Markets in the ‘Volunteer Opportunities’ section below.

Archaeology Project at Faulkner Homestead in South Acton

Have you ever dug up something and wondered what it was?

The oldest house in Acton has a tailings pile that we will screen to recover and document artifacts! These objects will potentially interpret the daily lives of Mill Corner starting in 1702 and potential ties to the events of April 19, 1775.

No experience is needed as training will be provided. This is for adults only.

The project gets underway on Labor Day (September 7, 2026) and we are asking for volunteers. Additional dates will be announced throughout the autumn. The project is sponsored by Iron Work Farm of Acton, stewards of the Faulkner House and Jones Tavern. The project will be directed by Kimberley Connors, former Acton Historical Commission Chair, and founder of Archaeology Outreach. She is well known for her work documenting and protecting sites, as well as her hands-on mock excavations with ABRSD students.
