For the next three weeks, two ABRHS seniors will be joining the Acton Exchange as part of a school-sanctioned internship. If you follow high school sports in town, you should keep reading.
I am a senior at ABRHS who will be heading to Marist University in the fall, where I will be joining the School of Communications. As a member of a generational Boston sports family and a former captain of the varsity soccer team, I’ve always had sports as a central part of my life. Joining me is Lucas Corbett, a fellow senior who is headed to Syracuse University to study Sports Management. Lucas is also a Boston sports enthusiast, with a particular passion for college sports and basketball.
So why are we writing for the Acton Exchange? The opportunity comes through our Career and Financial Literacy Seminar class, a semester-long ABRHS elective that helps juniors and seniors prepare for life after high school. The class covers everything from writing a résumé and crafting a cover letter, to budgeting, wise use of credit, car buying, and trip planning: all with the goal of preparing students for life after high school.
The capstone of the class is a three-week internship. Instead of attending school for the final three weeks of the year, selected 12th grade students, including Lucas and me, have the opportunity to participate in an internship of their choosing. For us, that internship is with the Acton Exchange.
Our goal over these three weeks is to contribute to the Acton Exchange as a whole and, in particular, to expand upon its Sports section. As two huge sports fans, we want to shine a spotlight on the athletic community right here in Acton. High school sports are a cornerstone of Acton Boxborough Regional High School and the town. Having been a part of that world as players ourselves, we can tell you firsthand that a lot of great sports stories fly under the radar of the greater Acton community.
Over the course of the three weeks, readers can expect game reports and recaps, features on individual players, interviews with athletes and coaches, and more.

“I am new to the class/program this year, having taught English in the District for many years. While some students chose to intern with some of our longtime partners–the Acton Police department, the AB schools, Acton TV, and several local realtors, for example–other students branched out and found placements at start-ups, private schools, equestrian centers, and design firms. One significant shift I noticed was a major increase in the desire to pursue nursing internships from years past. I suppose it reflects the current boom in applications to nursing programs at colleges and universities.To that end, Michelle Riley, the head of nursing for the School District, was incredibly helpful and instrumental in placing our students in the local schools and with the Acton Nursing Service.
“I was really impressed by the number of students who came in with a clear idea of what they wanted to pursue for an internship. Kieran and Lucas, for example, both plan to study journalism in college–so seeking out an internship with you at the Acton Exchange was a perfect idea and an awesome place for them to land! And you lucked out because they are good writers and even better humans!”
